Nearly everything on the record stages from one of nine towns, and most of those towns are a morning's drive apart. That is what makes a pairing work: a floatplane back into Campbell River by 11:15 and a water taxi out of the same harbour at 7:30 the next day. What breaks one is the calendar, a lodge that only flies on Fridays, a pre-night the operator insists on, a season that closes a week before the other opens. The builder knows those rules because the Ledgers do.

The price is the operators' own: the lowest published double rate for that month, or the trip the place is known for where the cheapest one is a taster, plus their tax. The road between the gateways, the nights in town and the bed in Tofino are our estimates and say so, the way the cost calculators do. Where an operator publishes no rate, the line says price on enquiry and stays out of the total.
