The slow island: shooting Lightwater Cove
An oceanfront farm on Salt Spring Island's quiet south end, where breakfast is grown on the property and the ferry schedule is the only deadline. I brought cameras to a place designed for putting them down.

Read the storyAbout Lightwater Cove
Lightwater Cove is an oceanfront guesthouse and working farm on the south end of Salt Spring Island, at 301 King Road, with four rooms and suites, the Archipelago Room, Wheelhouse Suite, Magnolia Terrace and Maple Terrace. Breakfast is made from eggs and produce grown on the property and from other island farms, and is included. The grounds run to botanical gardens with waterfalls and lily ponds, a greenhouse, a library, a hot tub and sauna, and a private sand beach, which is rare on this coastline. A spa operates on site with massage and facials booked separately from the room. Children aged ten and over are accepted and there is a two-night minimum. Getting there is by BC Ferries or floatplane; you will want a car once on the island.

Rates
Tap a package to ask about it: the chat opens with the season, nights and occupancy filled in.
Summer, double, 2026. Per person sharing, Canadian dollars, for the two-night minimum stay, the lowest week in each season as the booking engine quoted it on 14 September 2026 (weekends and specific dates run higher, up to $1,440 for a summer weekend in the Wheelhouse), before the 15% taxes and fees the booking engine adds. The guesthouse prices rooms, not people: "from $856 for 2 nights" for the Archipelago Room means $428 each for two, or $856 for one, since the engine quotes the same for one guest as for two. These are the printed "from" figures; the engine quotes more for summer and for some weekends.

Questions people ask
How much does Lightwater Cove cost?
Rooms are priced per room for a minimum of two nights with breakfast. The printed "from" rates are $856 for the Archipelago Room and Maple Terrace, $896 for Magnolia Terrace and $1,040 for the Wheelhouse Suite, plus 15% taxes and fees, so a couple pays from $428 each before tax. One guest pays the same as two.
The booking engine quotes the exact price for your dates: when read in September 2026 it gave $856 for the Archipelago Room on a November weekend, $992 in May and June 2027, and $1,256 in July and August 2027. Book from the room pages or ask us.
What are the rooms like?
Four rooms in the timber-and-glass lodge, all with ocean views, full-length windows that open, a private deck or terrace, ensuite with rain shower, air conditioning, organic linens on artisan-crafted beds of salvaged fir or maple with copper inlay, robes, slippers and island-made bath products. The Archipelago Room has a king and a south balcony down the cove; the Wheelhouse Suite a king, a curved sitting room with a captain's view, a corner deck and a soaker tub; Maple Terrace a maple king, a secluded garden terrace and a jacuzzi tub; Magnolia Terrace two queens, the largest terrace and a jacuzzi tub.
The booking engine also lists rooms in Heron Nest House a minute's walk uphill, Orca Cottage, Orchard Suite and the Circle Room, none of them described on the Stay page; ask the guesthouse.
What does a day look like?
Breakfast in the Atrium, then the days are yours, in the guesthouse's words: the beach, the deer trails to the Point, the gardens and ponds, the farm stand, the hot tub and sauna, a spa treatment, or the car into Ganges for wine, crafts and dinner. There is no programme and no dinner service; Ruckle Park is next door.
How do I get there, and do I need a car?
BC Ferries for cars and foot passengers from Tsawwassen (Vancouver) and Swartz Bay (Victoria), 35 minutes to 3 hours depending on the route, reservations recommended; or Harbour Air to Ganges from Vancouver Harbour, Vancouver airport and Seattle, three flights a day from downtown. The guesthouse is at 301 King Road on the south end of the island, off Beaver Point Road.
Bring a car or rent one, the guesthouse says plainly: it does not serve dinner, and many restaurants and island attractions are reachable only by car. Silver Shadow Taxi runs 24 hours and Salt Spring Car and Scooter Rental has cars; the nearest restaurants are a 10-minute drive.
When can I check in?
Between 3 and 7 pm. Email ahead if you will be later, and note that as a small retreat it cannot take a check-in after 9 pm. Check-out is 11 am.
What is breakfast, and is there other food?
A freshly prepared, gourmet breakfast from the farm's free-range eggs and produce, and from other island farms, served in the ocean-view Salish Sea Atrium and always included. Coffee, tea and sparkling water are there all day. Some rooms have a mini fridge. No lunch or dinner; the farm stand sells produce.
Can we bring children?
Children aged 10 and up. No pets; registered service dogs with prior notice. The whole property is non-smoking, indoors and out.
Is there wifi and power for a car?
Complimentary high-speed wifi and, in the guesthouse's words, excellent cell reception. Electric car chargers on site. The buildings run on heat pumps with heat-recovery ventilation and solar hot water.
What about the spa?
Lightwater Natural Wellness is on site and open only to registered guests: massages, facials and body treatments, and the two-hour Light, Water and Stone Journey packages at $365 each. Request a treatment by the form, ideally two weeks ahead; 48 hours' notice to cancel; groups up to four.
What should I pack?
Layers and a raincoat in spring, a light jacket for summer evenings, something warmer and a raincoat in fall, and warm, rain-resistant clothing with waterproof boots from November to February, in the guesthouse's own seasonal advice. Robes and slippers are in the room; a swimsuit for the hot tub.
Is it open all year?
The guesthouse describes itself as a destination for all seasons and gives advice for winter stays. When the booking calendar was read in September 2026 it offered nothing in December 2026 or January 2027 for any room, so ask before planning a midwinter visit.
Do I tip?
The guesthouse says nothing about gratuities.
