Rod, reel, rotor: three ways to fish British Columbia

Fifteen private lakes in the Interior, a heli-fishing lodge on the Gold River, and a charter fleet working Tofino's open coast year-round. I've photographed all three, here's how to choose between them.

About The Lodge at Gold River

The Lodge at Gold River is a year-round fly-fishing lodge on the bank of the Gold River, minutes from Strathcona Provincial Park and roughly an hour and a half west of Campbell River. Three cabins hold three guest rooms each, all 540 square feet with two queen beds, a wood-burning fireplace and a granite bathroom, and the property holds 1,200 feet of river frontage plus a casting pond. It is unusual in this directory for publishing a full rate card: an all-inclusive nightly rate per person, and fishing added by the day. Heli-fishing is the signature product, flying anglers to water that takes a helicopter to reach, with long-haul and short-haul options; guided saltwater days on Nootka Sound and local freshwater days cost considerably less. A tack room rents Sage rods and Simms waders, and there is a heated drying room, a gym and bikes.

Questions people ask

How much does The Lodge at Gold River cost?

The 2026 all-inclusive rate is $780 per person per night on double occupancy and $925 single, covering the room, all meals and appetisers, non-alcoholic drinks, the Campbell River transfer and the lodge's amenities. A room-only rate is $675 per night. Taxes, gratuities and fishing licences are on top, and the lodge quotes single, group and non-angler pricing on request.

Fishing is bought by the day, per person: heli fishing $4,750 for a long haul or $3,900 for a short haul (priced on four guests sharing the helicopter), a guided saltwater day on Nootka Sound $1,000, a local freshwater day $500, a party barge lake day $550. Each includes guides, gear, lunch and transport. Three nights with two river days and one heli day would therefore be $2,340 in accommodation plus $4,900 of fishing per person before tax.

What are the rooms like?

Three cabins of three rooms each, so nine in all. Every room is 540 square feet with two queen beds, a wood-burning fireplace, a furnished sitting area, a granite bathroom (some with a walk-in shower, some with a tub and shower), climate control and air conditioning, a telephone, wireless internet and cable television, and a semi-private covered deck with river and mountain views. The main lodge is a scribed spruce and pine log building on nearly 1,200 feet of river frontage, with an outdoor patio and fireplace for dinner outside.

What is heli fishing?

The lodge uses boats, helicopters and floatplanes for guiding, which opens rivers and lakes that can only be reached by air. A heli day is priced per person on four guests sharing the aircraft, at $3,900 for a short haul and $4,750 for a long haul, with the guide, the gear, lunch and the flight included. Non-anglers can fly along for a picnic: $475 per person when added to a fishing day, $1,750 for a heli-picnic on its own. Private helicopters can land at the lodge.

What does a day look like?

The lodge does not publish a day's timetable; it says each stay is customised in conversation, from a single day's fishing to an all-inclusive weekend. What it does describe is the frame: fly fishing on the lodge's own river frontage and the casting pond (stocked with rainbow trout, with a running creek and falls), guided days on the local rivers or a helicopter to farther water, and saltwater days for chinook, coho and halibut on Nootka Sound. The tack room is fishing central, with the drying room ready for the next morning.

How do I get there?

The lodge is at 100 Muchalat Drive, Gold River, on Highway 28 about an hour west of Campbell River through Strathcona Park. Fly to Campbell River, where Central Mountain Air, Pacific Coastal and Kenmore Air arrive daily from Vancouver and Seattle, and the lodge's staff meet you; the transfer is in the all-inclusive rate. Driving from Vancouver means a BC Ferries crossing to the island, then the road north and west.

There is no airstrip at Gold River. Private helicopters can land at the lodge; floatplanes use the dock 8 miles away at the head of Muchalat Inlet, where Sound Flight runs a scheduled summer service from Seattle.

What is the food and drink?

All meals are in the rate: breakfast, lunch, dinner and appetisers, with lunch carried on a fishing day. Non-alcoholic drinks are included; the rate card does not mention alcohol, so ask. The lodge describes dinner around the outdoor fireplace on the patio after the day.

Do I need to be able to fish, or fit?

The lodge says it finds the right fishing for you whatever your level of experience, and it prices non-anglers separately on request. It publishes no minimum age and no fitness requirement. Fly fishing from a gravel-bar river in waders is on your feet all day; a saltwater day on Nootka Sound is from a boat; the heli-picnic is the non-angler's way to see the country.

Is there wifi, cell signal or power?

Yes to all three. Every room has high-speed wireless internet, a telephone and cable television, with climate control and air conditioning. The lodge says nothing about power because it does not need to: it is in the village of Gold River, on Highway 28.

What should I pack, and what is lent?

Guests on a guided fishing package can use the tack room's Sage rods and reels and Simms wading gear, and the heated drying room turns wet waders and boots around overnight, so you can travel light on tackle. Bring your own layers for the river and the boat, and your licences: the lodge lists them among the things not included.

Which licences do I need?

A BC freshwater fishing licence for the rivers and lakes, with the steelhead conservation stamp if you fish for steelhead, and a federal Tidal Waters Sport Fishing Licence with the salmon conservation stamp for the saltwater day. Both are bought online and are not in the lodge's rates.

Do I tip?

Gratuities are not included and the lodge suggests no figure. The cost calculator uses 10% of the stay as an estimate.

What are the booking terms?

The lodge publishes none: no deposit, balance date, cancellation ladder or weather policy. Its stated way of working is a conversation before every booking, so ask for the terms in writing then, and ask specifically what happens to a heli fishing day the weather grounds.
