The floating lodge in Quait Bay: Wahous Wilderness Lodge, before and after the name

I built the 360 tour of this floating lodge in Clayoquot Sound when it was Tofino Wilderness Resort. In 2022 the Ahousaht hawiih bought it and reopened it as Wahous. This is the place as the tour shows it, from the channel in to the longhouse fire, and what a stay there costs and includes now, from the lodge's own pages.

About Wahous Wilderness Lodge

Wahous Wilderness Lodge is a floating lodge moored in Quait Bay, Clayoquot Sound, 20 minutes by boat from Tofino, owned since 2022 by the Ahousaht hawiih through the Maaqtusiis Hahoulthee Stewardship Society and run by members of the Ahousaht community. The former Tofino Wilderness Resort, it has sixteen guest rooms in four categories across two decks of the floating House of Kwa-kwithl, each with a private waterfront deck, and four forest cabins with kitchens a short walk away, on 126 acres with a cedar longhouse at the centre, a floating feast house for tide-to-table meals, a cleansing-house spa with hot tubs, a sauna and a cold plunge, trails, and the warm fresh water of Darville Lake. Stays are all-inclusive packages of two, three or four nights with arrivals on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays in a season of 2 July to 18 October: meals, drinks by the glass, guided kayaking, a wildlife boat tour and the boat from Tofino are in the price. I built the 360 tour of the property in its Tofino Wilderness Resort days, from the aerials over the channel to the longhouse fire.

Questions people ask

How much does Wahous Wilderness Lodge cost?

Three all-inclusive packages in 2026: two nights from $2,425.69, three nights from $3,673 and four nights from $4,859, each per person, double occupancy in a Deck 1 stateroom, with taxes and fees included. The price covers the room, every meal, drinks by the glass at meals, the boat from Tofino and back, the guided kayaking and wildlife tour, the trails, the lake and the spa decks. The corner rooms, Deck 2 and the forest cabins cost more and are priced in the booking engine.

How do I get there, and which days can I arrive?

You get yourself to Tofino: three hours from Nanaimo on Highway 4, four and a half from Victoria, or a Pacific Coastal or Harbour Air flight into Tofino-Long Beach airport, 20 minutes from town. The lodge asks you to spend the night before on the island.

Check in at Ahous Adventures, 368 Main Street, between 10 am and 2:30 pm on the day; the boat leaves from 3 pm and the crossing through Clayoquot Sound takes about 20 minutes. Arrivals are on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays only. If your day does not fit, a private charter can be arranged at a cost, and seaplanes from Vancouver straight to Quait Bay on request.

What are the rooms like?

The floating lodge, House of Kwa-kwithl, has sixteen rooms in four categories across two decks, Deck 1 and Deck 2 staterooms and corner rooms, each with large windows and a private waterfront deck over the tide. A short walk from the lodge are four forest cabins named for wolf, bear, eagle and raven, open plan with full kitchens and views of forest and water, for guests who want to settle in.

What happens in a day?

Arrival day is the crossing, a welcome and an evening in the longhouse and the feast house. From there the days are yours: coffee on the deck, a kayak across the bay or a morning at the spa, breakfast when you are ready, then a guided outing (kayaking along Cypress Bay, the boat wildlife tour, the Darville Lake trail, a fishing charter) or a self-guided one (the lake, a paddle, the spa). Lunch on the lodge, packed, or as a picnic on a beach; dinner brings everyone back. Departure morning is breakfast and the boat to Tofino.

Is the lodge accessible?

No. The lodge says a high level of mobility is essential: you board and leave the boat onto floating docks, and the paths between the buildings include steep ramps and flights of stairs. It is not wheelchair accessible; guests with mobility considerations are asked to contact the lodge to discuss what is possible.

Is there phone signal, and can I bring a dog?

No cellular service; complimentary wifi in every room, slower than at home. No pets: the lodge says domesticated animals are a wildlife attractant, and it will point you to pet-sitting in Tofino. Service animals need BC documentation and a conversation with the lodge first.

What should I pack?

Warm layers, a toque and a sun hat, a swimsuit, comfortable shoes, waterproof boots and a light waterproof jacket, sunscreen and repellent, and any medication. The lodge provides rain jackets and pants, rubber boots, hiking poles, robes, slippers, a flashlight and a water bottle, and there is a laundry service. There is no dress code at dinner.

What are the cancellation terms?

A 50% deposit at booking; the balance is charged 45 days before arrival and is non-refundable from that point. Cancel 45 days or more out and you lose $150 per person with the rest refunded; inside 45 days the whole stay is forfeited, as are no-shows, late arrivals and early departures. Changes are possible 45 days or more out for $50 each and not at all inside 45 days.

Who owns the lodge?

The Ahousaht hawiih (Chiefs), through the Maaqtusiis Hahoulthee Stewardship Society, which bought the former Tofino Wilderness Resort in 2022. It is operated by members of the Ahousaht community, with the longhouse at its centre, and the boat partner in Tofino, Ahous Adventures, is also Ahousaht-owned.
