Base camp: five beds in Canmore and Revelstoke, the night before the mountains

Every trip into the Rockies or the Columbias starts with a night in town. I photographed, filmed and built the 360 tours for five Basecamp Resorts properties, four in Canmore and one above the Columbia River in Revelstoke. This is which one to pick for which trip, and what the nights there are like.

About Basecamp Resorts Revelstoke

Basecamp Resorts Revelstoke is a row of modern suites on a forested bluff above the Columbia River on Highway 23 North, a few minutes from downtown Revelstoke and the road to the mountain resort. The units run from a micro studio for two to a six-bedroom suite for fourteen, every one with a full kitchen, and the bigger ones with two or three bathrooms and a private patio. Two hot tubs on the roof deck look over the river and the Monashees and are open from nine in the morning to ten at night; shared barbecues run year-round and grill tools come from the front desk. In winter the front desk hands out complimentary shuttle vouchers, with pick-up from the parking lot to town and the mountain base. I photographed and filmed the property from the ground and the air and built its 360 tour, and stayed in the suites while I did.

The hot tubs close during extreme cold and for maintenance; the winter shuttle runs in the ski season only.

Questions people ask

Which suite for which party?

The micro studio is one bed and a bathroom for two. The one-bedroom sleeps four with a patio; the two-bedroom six with two and a half bathrooms; the three-bedroom eight, and its bunk version ten with four beds and two bathrooms; the four-bedroom twelve; the five- and six-bedroom fourteen. Every unit has a full kitchen, so a ski week for two families is the six-bedroom rather than three rooms.

How far is it from the ski hill and from town?

The suites are on Highway 23 North at the edge of town, about 5 minutes by car to downtown and 10 to the resort base. In winter the front desk hands out complimentary shuttle vouchers and the shuttle picks up in the parking lot; without a voucher it is $2 a ride.

What does a night cost?

Basecamp does not print a rate card; the price for each room or suite is set by the date and the length of stay in the booking engine on the property page, with a choice of a flexible rate (cancel free until 72 hours before arrival) and a lower non-refundable prepaid rate. Suites with kitchens are priced for the whole unit, not per person, so a family or two couples in a two-bedroom pays one rate.

Can I bring my dog?

At the properties with pet-friendly units, yes, up to two pets, and you must say so when you book so a pet-friendly unit is allocated; a pet found in a non-pet unit is charged $100 a night. Pets stay off the furniture and bedding, out of the spa, on a lead on the property, and any extra cleaning is billed.

Is there parking?

Basecamp aims to provide one complimentary space per reservation at every property, displayed with a parking pass; it is not guaranteed, and a second vehicle is not promised a space.
