Where they are in Canadian Rockies

What is a gateway stay, and why is it on a wilderness record?

A hotel, suite or lodge in a town the trips start from: Canmore for the Rockies, Revelstoke for the Columbia Mountains, Campbell River for the coast. Most of the experiences on this record need a night on either side of the transfer, and a week of day trips needs a base. These pages exist so that night is chosen with the same first-hand information as the trip itself.

How are they priced?

By the room or the suite, per night, and the rate moves with the date; none of the operators here publish a fixed tariff, so the Ledger records what a stay includes, the terms and the check-in times, and the live price sits behind the booking link. Suites with full kitchens are priced for the unit, which changes the arithmetic for a family or two couples.

Which one for which trip?

A suite with a kitchen and in-unit laundry suits a week of day trips and a group; a lodge room with a great room and a sauna suits a night or two between drives; a downtown hotel suits anyone who wants to walk to dinner. The comparison table below puts the differences side by side.

Canadian Rockies: frequently asked

Are these the places the operators put their guests?

Not necessarily. Some experiences include a pre-night at a partner hotel and say so in their Ledger; these pages are the stays I have used and photographed myself, and a booking here is your own arrangement with the property.

Can I bring a dog?

Some units at some properties are pet-friendly, always by prior notice and never more than two; the Ledger on each page records the policy and the fine for an unannounced pet.

Is parking included?

The operators here aim for one complimentary space per reservation; it is stated on each page where the terms say so.

Do you need a park pass?

Yes: a Parks Canada pass is required for any property inside a national park, and is charged per vehicle per day or annually. It is rarely included in a lodge rate.

When is the best time to visit the Rockies?

June through September for hiking and glamping, December through March for winter programmes. Late September carries good weather odds with far lower visitor numbers.
