Moutcha Bay is the road-accessible member of the Nootka Marine Adventures group and the one that works for a mixed party. It is about two hours west of Campbell River through Strathcona Park and Gold River, on the shore of Nootka Sound, and it sells accommodation by the unit rather than as a fishing package. Ten waterfront cedar yurts sit on the beach, alongside waterfront chalets, two-storey lodge suites and 24 serviced campsites with washhouses. Breakfast is included with the suites, yurts and chalets; the licensed Conuma Grill handles dinner. A full-service marina supplies fuel, moorage, tackle and the group's guided and rental boat fleet, so anglers can fish guided, rent a centre console and fish alone, or skip fishing entirely for kayaking or the playground. Pets are welcome in some units.

**How do the fishing packages work?**

Four packages, each for 3 or 4 nights, priced per person in a Signature Cedar Yurt for two or a Luxury Cedar Yurt for three or four, with breakfast, packed lunch and a three-course dinner at the Conuma Grill each day. Gold is fully guided on a 32-foot North River, $3,479 per person for 3 nights two to a boat or $2,639 four to a boat. Silver is one guided day then the same 24-foot ABD on your own, $2,599 for 3 nights. Bronze is self-guided on an 18-foot Quay Craft, $1,829 for 3 nights, or $1,799 with four aboard. The Nootka Explorer swaps most of the fishing for the Wildlife and Heritage tour and kayaking, from $2,179. Gold, Silver and Bronze include fish processing.

**What are the units like?**

The lodge holds two-storey suites with ensuite bathrooms and balconies over the bay: a queen upstairs and a sleeper sofa down in the Lodge Suite, with a den added in the Plus, two private queen rooms and a full kitchen in the Premium, two queens and a kitchenette in the Family Suite, three queens in the Group Suite.

The Luxury Cedar Yurts have a full kitchen, a full bathroom with a soaker tub, a king or two twins in the main bedroom and again in the loft, a pull-out couch, a wrap-around deck and a private barbecue; yurt 111 has no loft and yurt 112 has an accessible ramp and shower. The Signature Cedar Yurts on the shoreline have a king or two twins, two futon chairs for children 12 and under, a bar fridge and coffee maker, a heated washroom with shower next door with its own outside entrance, and a waterfront deck with a barbecue; number 5 is adapted for accessibility. The Waterfront Chalets sleep six to eight in three bedrooms (a queen and two doubles) plus a sleeper sofa, with a full kitchen and a covered patio. The eight Forest Cabins in The Grove are for one or two, a king or two twins, heating and cooling, blackout curtains and a covered deck, with washrooms and hot showers a short walk away and limited wifi.

**What is the road in like?**

Highway 28 west from Campbell River for about 91 km to Gold River, through Strathcona Park, then straight on along Head Bay Road following the signs to Tahsis. That last stretch is gravel with grades of 15 and 18%, its condition depending on when it was last graded and the weather; the resort asks for working brakes, headlights on, and pulling over for larger vehicles. The resort sign is on the left about 6 km past the Conuma fish hatchery. Count on two hours from Campbell River. Towing a boat of 24 feet or more, consider launching at Gold River and arriving by water; the dock team is on VHF channel 6 and the resort sits at 49° 47.28 N, 126° 27.67 W. Floatplanes land at the dock: Air Nootka from Gold River, Seair from Vancouver, Northwest Seaplanes from Seattle.

**Can I rent a boat, or bring my own?**

The marina is home to the group's rental fleet, available to guests of Moutcha Bay and Nootka Sound Resort. In 2026 an 18-foot Quay Craft is $499 for a full day (10 hours) and $399 for a half day; a 22-foot ABD $799 and $649; a 24-foot ABD $999 and $749. The 2027 full-day rates are $599, $899 and $1,049. Each comes with safety gear, VHF, GPS and sounder, two electric downriggers, rods, reels, net, gaff and basic tackle, takes up to four people, and the 22 and 24-footers have a head. Fuel and bait are extra.

Bringing your own, the full-service marina has diesel and gas, moorage at a reserved slip, a boat ramp, tackle, bait, ice and snacks, and a campsite rate includes parking for the trailer and use of the launch. A guided day on a 32-foot North River is $2,150 for one to three anglers in 2026, $2,175 for four, $2,200 for five, $2,225 for six, with lunch aboard.

**What is the food and drink?**

Breakfast is included with the lodge suites, yurts and chalets (dine-in or a continental take-away for an early boat), and for two with a Forest Cabin. The Conuma Grill on the main floor of the lodge is licensed and family-friendly, with a locally sourced menu for afternoon shared plates and dinner. The fishing packages add a packed lunch and a three-course dinner there each day. Barbecues stand around the resort for anyone, the yurts and chalets have their own, and the campground has a communal area for cooking the day's catch.

**Is it good for children and non-anglers?**

It is the family one of the three. There is a playground with a zipline in the Highland campground, kayaks and paddleboards for rent, the beach in front of the yurts, and the Wildlife and Heritage tour, a private 7-hour boat trip for up to six to Yuquot (Friendly Cove), the sea otters and the whales off Maquinna Point, at $2,000 per tour plus tax with lunch aboard. Guided boats take guests from age 5 with an adult for anyone under 18, and the Anglers Academy is built for children as much as adults. Pets are welcome in the chalets, yurts 1 to 4, select Forest Cabins and the campsites, on a leash of six feet or less and never left alone.

**Is there wifi or cell signal?**

Complimentary wifi on a satellite link the resort itself calls spotty, in the guest rooms, at the restaurant and the Dock Shack, and on the campsites; limited in the Forest Cabins. No cell coverage at any of the three resorts; a phone at the front desk is free for guests. The campsites have 30-amp power and water hookups.

**Do I need a fishing licence?**

Yes, if you fish. Every angler needs a Tidal Waters Sport Fishing Licence with the salmon conservation stamp, carried on the water, and the resort asks you to buy it online from Fisheries and Oceans Canada before you arrive. The resort fishes Areas 25 and 125; check the regulations for the openings and limits in force.

**What should I pack?**

For a guided day, the resort's own list is your fishing licence, warm layered clothing, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen; rain gear is provided only at the two floating resorts, so bring your own here. Campers bring everything but firewood, which is $10 a bin and cannot be gathered on site; fire bans are common on Vancouver Island in summer. Smoking is not allowed in the units or public spaces, with a $250 cleaning charge if you do.

**Do I tip?**

Gratuities are not in the price. The resort's guidance is $70 to $100 per guest per day on the boat for the guide, and 20% of your stay for the shore staff, which can be added to your room charges and paid by card on departure.

**Can I stay outside the summer season?**

The published season is May to September (the resort page itself says June). For group bookings outside it, the Rates page says to ask guest services. Check-in is at 4pm and check-out at 11am.
